Hi. What is the best forum software out there. I am thinking of the idea about getting Vbulletin. My Forum site is SMF and i am just wondering how easy is it to convert the data. We have about 40 members and 1000 posts.

Thanks,
Nathaniel

"There is no best software. There is only the software that's best for you."

I imagine (not speaking from experience) that converting won't be a problem. If you want the added features and can afford it, it's your choice. Do shop around though, it's not just SMF and vB out there ;)

vBulletin's import system is excellent, and converting from SMF to vBulletin will not be a problem. Simply setup your vBulletin installation, copy your SMF db, and import that db into vBulletin (never import live db's, becuase if you make a mistake your data is gone). Easy as that!

Yes. Sometimes passwords may not be imported (I can't remember if it can import SMF passwords or not), but in that case you would instruct all users to use the "Forgot Password" link to retrieve their password.

I personally have used phpBB, SMF, Invision Power Board (IPB and IP.Board) and vBulletin. As Scott said, "There is only the software that's best for you."

I am a huge fan of Invision Power Board (IP.Board), but that is only because I have used it ever since IPB 1.3. We have a LONG history together.

I like both vB and php boards. I think you should choose which software works best for you and decide which one you are able to modify and use it to its potential.

Use some demos, and do some testing before you make a decision.
