Trickery didn't even come up in conversation of late. I think it was just stuck in the back of my head, the way the word sticks in the back of my mouth. It just decided to come out in this thread.

That reminds me of a vocabulary review activity I used to do as a language teacher.

First, I'd have the students write words in 2 columns: words they like, and words they don't like. I'd give examples to show that the reasons weren't necessarily the words' meanings. You could like or dislike a word because of its sound, its pronunciation, its similarity with a word in your first language, its spelling, an association you have with the word, and so on. We were taking off the outer coat to reveal more layers.

The next part of the activity was to give away the words you don't like to someone who likes them. You had to explain why you liked or didn't like a word, you could cross off a word when you gave it away, and when you took one, you added it to your list. At the end of the activity, I'd put the leftover words on the board, and we could usually find someone for them then.

You would've enjoyed that activity, even in your first language. :)

That's a much bigger subject. Words have power in many ways, even for people who aren't tuned in to their power.
