Well title really does say it all, running a free webhost Ive had to put quiet a few bad bans in place. The worst being a 2 Year ban for a guy that continually spammed the forum with warez and sending Pm's to every member about warez, it was riddiculous!

Share your bad bans and how you generally deal with trouble makers!

Well I wasn't insanely popular at another weight training forum I was a part of. And one time a bunch of guys from that forum registered and just spammed the living shit out of mine calling me a liar and stuff. I just deleted it and permabanned everyone involved.

Probably the biggest troublemaker on my forum is this 13 year old kid that keeps reregistering and making these dumbass posts. But in the same breathe he is only trying to impress the older guys so I'll either just delete and ban or edit the posts to something funny.

it depends how forums deal out the bans. Short tempory bans work best i think. You learn your lesson.

I am serving out a 1 week ban on webhostingtalk :( but it could have been avoided if i had read the rules properly. I have learn my lesson and the short ban did good.

Often there is no need for a major ban, people learn thier lesson, and a long ban will make them re-register.

Banning is generally the hardest thing I do. :(

The worst ban I did on one of my own boards (now defunct) was banning someone that followed the link in my sig from WHT a while back. They were banned on WHT for some nasty stuff and signed up on my mboard and started posts slamming WHT and one of the CLs. After I checked the IPs of the person between the 2 boards and found it was the same person (or something inpersonating a human), his arse was grass. Most of the other bans were for spam warez, etc.

BOLT, why dont you Ban there IP's should you have vbulltin, vbulletin.org has many mods that will allow you to block them from coming back.

I dont find temporary bans work on small places. Places like WHT its different as people making livings off it and its extremely useful. Other forums which arnt as needed temp bans arnt ususaly that good I feel.

IP bans don't always work and backfire in many cases. For instance, if the user has a dynamic IP, you will never be able to ban him as his IP changes all the time. You also might inadvertently ban an unsuspecting user who the ban wasn't meant for. They are also very easy to bypass, all you have to do is visit one of the many proxy sites out there or just user a tor server. So in theory, IP banning is great, but most experienced users can bypass it very easily. That's a different discussion tho. ;)

I would say the worst ban I had to instate was for this one user that kept flaming and attacking other members. We(myself and my fellow moderators) at first gave him several warnings, tried to talk to him, and let him know what he was doing is not tolerated here. Finally, we banned him for a week, then a month. After the month, he said he was going to obey our rules, but little did we know he was PMing certian members and doing the same exact thing he was originally baned for! Go figure!

Well - the only person i've had to ban from Reality Gaming so far is this little ****head name Alex Vinar, who is very well known in Australia for being a persistant hacker in Counter-Strike: Source...

Now instead of banning him, i've decided to trial the Miserable Users mod on him :D

Probably the guy that reregistered about 20 times after going from helpful member to complete psycho overnight. DOSes, spamming, flaming...you name it, he was doing it. That was the biggest pain on my forum, I think.

Aside from spambots (which we don't have anymore), we rarely ban people. Warning, then a three day ban, then it's permanent, though that's somewhat of a judgement call, depending on the infraction and severity and such.

We had a member who got upset over a post being trashed, and quickly escalated to death threats to an admin, as well as the adnin's wife and kids.
