I have submitted to a few directories over time, but I have never seen one visitor from any of them :)

^^ directories are NOT for visitors, Since you are online a lot of time and an avid internet user, Do you visit any directory to seek any website ever?

They are for backlinks.
The more the backlinks --> (a)the more google crawls (b) High PR. Thats it. I have seen many of my websites on very competitive niche ranking on 1-3 results in google several times, only because of backlinks.

I agree that directories are for backlinks. But if you have good PR of your directories, people will come to search in your directories. So in away if you have good PR and also SERPs, You will get traffic from there too. But Yes it is not the best way to drag traffic. But it could.
