If I wanted to wear the title of SEO Guru, how would I start?
Is there a great on line resource?
Is it just finding what works?
How does one become an SEO Guru? :guru: <<<<< we need a guru emoticon

By spending hours a day immersing yourself in the topic. :)
You might want to settle for the title of "SEO student" or "someone who knows a few things about SEO" instead. ;)
I've learned a lot over the years from various sources, but I'm far from an expert. I don't expect to ever be one as it's just one of my interests.
Is there a great on line resource?
First, don't think that because a site has lots of information that it's good information. Are you familiar with the terms white hat and black hat for SEO? You need to know which is which and why before you start believing what you read.
You also need to know what's outdated. Some things that used to work don't work now. That's one reason I like getting information from forums rather than web pages, which are usually undated. Another reason is that you get discussion, and any questionable points of view are challenged.
You probably know the above, but it's a starting point for anyone reading this who's new to SEO.
Some sites I check out:
- Searchenginewatch.com site (http://searchenginewatch.com/) and forum (http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/)
- The forums the above site links to in its weekly Search Engine Forums Spotlight (you can get a daily newsletter that includes the weekly spotlight)
- Highrankings.com articles (http://www.highrankings.com/articles.htm) and forum (http://www.highrankings.com/forum/)
- Google's section for webmasters (http://www.google.com/webmasters/)
Some tools I use:
- Keyword Suggestion Tool (http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/) to find out what people are searching for
- A stats program that shows what keyword phrases bring people to your site (no need to name them all here)
Is it just finding what works?
It's easier to learn other people who have already figured out what works. :) That said, I've learned a few things on my own. More accurately, I tried things I'd learned, like putting keywords in <title>, <h1>, and <h2> tags, and I've seen the difference it made.
You could start a thread here about a specific aspect of SEO, and we could all join in. :)

instead of spending time and money for seo, you could spend time and money adding relevant content to a site or advertising in new places.
