a little birdie told me that adding banners (for advertising) to some popular forum software required a hack.

which forum software has built-in banner options?

Well, that little birdie is incorrect. At least for the major 3, vB, IPB, and phpBB. All it requires is an addition to a single template file. That is not considered a hack/MOD/whatever you want to call it. As for board software that comes with builtin banner options, I don't know of any that do. Someone else might.

Well, the validity of the "not being considered a hack/mod/whatever you want to call it" depends on whether or not you already have banner management software. If you do, then a simple <img> tag will do it. Otherwise, it won't.

I know I've seen some board software that did have built-in banner software. I'm pretty sure it was either a YaBB or UBB clone. I want to say http://cbb.agigames.com/index.php?action=features but I don't see that on the features list.

Just use PHP Ads New (http://phpadsnew.com/two/) and whatever forum software you want. Ads New is very easy to use and will place banner ad's where you want with a simple line of PHP Code. Just put the code in the template where you want the banner to appear :).

phpAdsNew was pretty easy to set up.

ok, let's talk through it.

someone downloads and installs vbulletin. what else is required for the forum to have rotating banners?

Depends, Do you want banner stats? Thats why I use phpadsnew. I paste the code into phpadsnew then paste that code into vb. No hack required :\
Dont need stats? paste your banner code into a txt file and have php draw from it as I have seen done before.
Do you need a fancy control panel to do that? Then install the fancy hack.
If vb had a rotating banner program I probably wouldnt use it because I want what phpadsnew can give me. I wouldnt base my forum software choice off of a such dilema of not having a banner system in place.

Yeh. I'm gonna keep playin' with phpadsnew. It seems pretty sweet. :)

It's pretty easy to incorporate banners, CD Burnt. If you can't get it, just post here and we'll help. :)

A "hack" is anything that modifies the original code . This could be something modifying the templates, the php code, or something else, so yes, technically it's required to "hack" your forums to install banner code.

However, with vb, it's not that hard to do, usually a quick insert and you're done :)

A "hack" is anything that modifies the original code.

By vB standards, a hack is only a code modification. They support template modifications, just not code. I thought I would point that out. I can't speak for the others as I'm not sure, but I'm sure Cameron or Micheal can clear it up for phpBB.

This is true, but it's still got to be hacked in. Sure, it's a LOT easier than it has been to do stuff like this, but it's still not in the software itself.

Haven't played too much with phpadsnew myself, but it looks like it might be just what I need ;)

Well, I don't think phpBB officially supports anything other than the package downloaded from www.phpbb.com and sourceforge.net. Anything else is considered modifided. I haven't read the support readme at phpbb.com in a long time, but I'm pretty sure that is the gist of one of the clauses. Perhaps point f.

For someone who has 25795 (http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=43818) posts (most in support), i'm pretty sure you know how things go AJD ;)

As for phpBB, template modifications aren't considered "hacks" or mods, unlike code modifications are, as they're cosmetic and don't affect how phpBB works.
