and i want to say something about this issue.
Our company started to make a support forum. We install it on there http://forum.cyberturk.org but not announce it
for getting a good "first imperession" what do you think about the number of categories?
If the number is very big; for the starting and the number of topics per categories are low is it true that we have to reduce it or when the category number is high, a new member could not find the true place to write? So we make them as sub-categories.
i want to ask you about the numberof categories.

. . .
i want to ask you about the numberof categories.For those of us that are hung up on understanding one language, can you just tell us the forums and categories in English? :)
I moved this to it's own thread so we can focus on your question. :)

Thanks;
Lets have a look for one section;
-Web Design
*HTML
*ASP
*PHP
*Java
*Portals and Forums
*..etc
now this is like that but there are 6 sections like that so the forum home page is very long and the number of posts per categories is very low for first imperision. When a visitor came there he thinks forum is very free.
my advise is if he can make section like that;
-Web Design
*HTML, ASP, PHP, Java
*Portals and Forums Scripts
is it ture or usefull?
Or has a negative effect on new users that the forum is not a big comminty?
i wish i could tell ;)

Ok, who's been in my brain again? :P
I'm actually pondering the same thing right now, as I'm in the process of (yet again) opening up another forum, this one off of VB. The problem is that there's wayyyyy too much to do, and trying to setup categories/forums is the ideal problem.
So, how many is too many?

If we just had a crystal ball . . . :crystal:
It looks like you know what you need to do.
Your proposed consolidation looks fine. I don't think new members would have a problem with it. In fact, having the HTML, ASP, PHP, Java forum with some posts in would look much better than having the HTML forum with some posts in them and the other three empty.
When the forum is busier and needs to evolve (they all evolve), then you can split off the languages as needed. :cool:

. . . So, how many is too many?I've thought about that and asked other admins the same thing.
But, it all comes down to supply and demand.
You can only support the number of forums that are used by your members. Since you can't support more than that, you can't have too many.
But, you can have empty or unused forums. And that's what you don't need.
There are no right amount of forum categories. There is only the amount of forum categories that's right for your community. :think:

i have a graduate on economics
i like it, supply and demand :) If there is enogh demand, we can supply categories :D
As a host, do you actually state you will give support for all the coding languages? (This is a support forum after all). Or is it general discussion on the languages where anyone can ask for advice from the member base?

i am thinking like a member based support forum. Support staff may be help some treads but i have some of web developer clients on server so members can discuss and may be solve their problems via this forum.
