Pre-University field trip?

Well, I just entered 11th grade and I just started thinking about university in general. I already have a university and a back-up in mind, thats not the problem. My problem is that I wanted to take a lil' brake from it all and go to Japan for some time. Well my question is, What kind of time should I stay on this break before starting at the big U?. I mean I was thinking a full year but then I would have wasted one full year, and well... doesnt seem like a good idea. So I am now thinking aout 1 or two months but then again I dont know how this applying to an university stuff works or how much time it will take...

So, how much time should I spend in Japan? Should I even go?
