:bawling: The power supply to my new computer died yesterday in the early hours of the morning. In a half asleep state (when I woke), I thought that maybe a fuse had blown, so checked that other things on that same fuse were working.

Okay not a fuse. :dfingers: Turns off system at the powerpoint, then back on - still dead, but I noticed that speakers, modem and screen were live, so.....what's the problem?

I think I *turned the PC on* about twenty times to check it. Next idea was to ring the store where I recently bought it, but I had about 90 minutes to wait before they opened (if they in fact did on Sunday), so I did some housework, caught up on laundry. Okay, 9am arrives.......:takecall: no answer, more :dfingers: Tries again at 9.30.......then after 10, finally an answer. But the guy could do nothing as he was there alone and only open for four hours.

After a while I considered taking my old hard drive out of new PC and firing up the old PC, but thought better of it as it was very hard to access that area in the old PC.

Soooooooooo, after more housework, I thought I would turn on the telly. Would you believe, every channel had sport :goggle: Hockey on one (which I watched for a bit), soccer, cricket and golf.

Then I had an , I got my old clunker PC (circa 1997) out and fired it :)up, and it still worked! But it didn't like my mouse so I had to do a lot of tabbing till I found a compatible mouse. Then tried establishing an internet connection but was unable to as I couldn't open the cd drive to set the drivers up for my 56k modem and couldn't get the ADSL CD out of my new PC to see if the system was strong enough for ADSL.

So after giving up on that, I played the games that come with windows (freecell solitaire etc) :banana2:

That's as far as I can go. ;) When I got a new computer a few months ago, I decided to keep the old one as it is so that it could be my backup puter. Those withdrawal symptoms are awful.

OTOH, I have to admit that when my ADSL connection goes down, I get more housework done. :spin:

I take it your computer has been fixed. :pink:

/me smashes FU for making him lose his reply

I try and fix it myself. If there is a part I need, we probably have it. Being this as my job most of the year, we have almost every part that is needed. But, the best thing you could do is call a friend to see if they can help. If you need a part, and hope a store that is open has it :)

If my computer isn't working I normally get working on what I should be doing...homework or similar.

If, on those lucky days when I have nothing of the sort, I'd probably read a book or go out.

This is why I always keep a backup of (almost) every part of the PC around the house. From Power Supplies to hard drives and video cards. Hell, I've got a case + Board sitting across the room from me, mainly because I'm just waiting on the right time to grab a cpu/heatsink/fan and test it out.

A power supply going bad usually means it wasn't strong enough to handle the power requirements in the first place. Might want to check and make sure that they actually upgraded it, rather than putting another lower end supply in there ;)

What do I do when I have a dead computer? Strip it down, clean it out and build it back up. Usually that fixes it. If not, I find the dead part and replace it ;).

What do I do when I have no internet? I call and yell @ my cable company ;) . Then I take a nap ;)
