Looks great, having the snow on the main page. When I first saw it, I tried to wipe if off my screen, but found it was part of the site. :dfingers:

Heh, I thought I was seeing spots before my eyes at first :D

Yeh, I figured it'd be a little much to have it on every page. But, just on the forum index is kinda nice.

I only had to shovel four times. :snowman:

I tried it on my forum and my screen-reader went nuts so I nuked it. It's a neat effect though.

I hate to be the negative one here, but when things move on the screen like that, my first reaction is to hit the Back button. I've been staying away from the main forum page when I can because of that instant reaction it causes. Unfortunately, it's a common reaction.

Also, how does that affect our combination of a professional appearance while being a playful bunch? We can be professional and have fun at the same time, but one of the thoughts I had when I saw the snow was that I told some people about this forum last night. If that snow is the first thing they see (if they come here), I don't know if it will be the first impression I'd like them to have.

But maybe I'm alone in my reactions and concerns. :scatter:

I know. :) And I can usually be positive even when other people can't. But I didn't make my usual stop here this afternoon because when I thought of the snow effect, it made me want to avoid this forum.

I avoid saying negative things when I don't see any benefit to saying them, but having movement on a web page bothers a lot of people. I've seen it on lists of annoying website gimmicks. To be fair, though, such lists are usually referring to blinking, flashing graphics.

Here's an example from one of those lists (http://web.sau.edu/cidt/DesignGuide.htm#graphics):

Avoid using page elements that move or blink. Most web users find them annoying rather than helpful....they pose a health threat to some users: moving and blinking images have an overpowering effect on peripheral vision, causing nausea, and can trigger seizures in people with epilepsy. Elements to avoid include scrolling text, marquees, and constantly running animations.

That's taken from a site about material for online courses, but most of the guidelines are relevant to all websites.

Lois, I would agree if it was a permanent fixture, but Christmas comes but once a year (not that snow has anything to do with Christmas on this side of the pond), so I'll just get with the spirit :)

As long as it's only on the main page, I can live with it. I won't even have to see it. I've now figured out how to get everywhere without going to that page. :)

But if it's added to other pages, I'll stop coming here until it's gone. Its effect on me and on some other people really is that bad.

I like it :D

Nice to see the smilies with their hats on aswell.

I agree with Lois on one point though, this isn't something I'd like to see on all pages :s

I'm not a fan of the snow, but at least it's not a lot. I've seen some people who have so much snow I wanted to blow my monitor up. :P

But it is a nice effect, and it doens't bother me much. I can live with it. :)

At least it's temporary.... They don't show on my cousin's machine now since you can tell FireFox to block certain things.

How do you do that? I use Firefox.

Thanks,

Thanks,
Lois You *could* disable Javascript altogether (Tools -> Options -> Content) but it wouldn cause a bit of havok too. Perhaps there is a FF plugin for site-specific javascript blocking.

They don't see the snow first, as there's no snow on the FU opening page (http://www.forumuniversity.com/?). It's only snowing on the FU Campus main page (http://www.forumuniversity.com/campus/index.php?). :D

That used to be the page I moved to and from. I almost never go to the opening page. But as I said, I'm getting around. :)

It's kind of like having an allergy. My friends who are allergic to cats can't come to my home because of how they react to my cat. They don't choose that reaction, of course, just as we all have reactions that we don't choose. I might as well be allergic to that snow for the reaction it causes in me.

Fortunately, the situation is only temporary, and I'm not allergic to cats. :kitty:
