View Full Version : Is giving Thanks different than Reputation?

Just messing with a new hack and seeing if it's something we want.

It seemed like a good idea in theory. But, it might just be too messy.

I like the idea better than the reputation thingy, which I wasn't sorry to see disappear a while ago. But I don't know if this new thanks thing works that well yet. I just clicked on the "Thanks" button for your post, and I didn't get to enter a reason why. A lot of people might click on the button just to see what happens, kind of like I did (although I did want to thank you for bringing up this idea :)).

Members also have the ability to remove thanks. That feels strange unless it's only right after clicking on the button in error.

Also, "thanks" still doesn't feel like quite the right word. I'd like something to say "Good post" where "thanks wouldn't feel like the best word. But I don't have another idea at this point.

We can make it say anything we want to make it say.

The purpose of the hack is to give credit where credit is due. Yet to keep the the thread clean by not having a bunch of "Nice post," "Thanks for posting that," "You teh best!" kind of clutter that can make a thread messy.

Here is what the hack creator had to say about it.About this hack:
One of the biggest problems on forums as you may know is 'posts boosting'. There are users who LOVE to say 'thanks' when ever they can. How can it hurt? Their post count goes up, they have nothing to loose.

There are also users who really like to express their thanks to post but don't like posting a post that looks like they're post boosting.

Then comes the moderators who have to delete people’s thanks yous so a thread can look readable with out the thanks yous thrown around.

Finally comes the posters of these useful posts. They have no idea how many people really likes their posts if only some people say 'thanks'.

What this hack does is fix ALL these problems - except those users who like post boosting. This places a button called 'thanks.' When a user clicks on it, it places his username in a box right under the post saying that so-and-so says 'thanks' for the post. Every-one who clicks is placed in one box.

By giving your users the extra feature, you forum will look allot nice and organized. It is a granted liking by ALL the members of your forum.

Ah, that makes more sense. Thanks! I mean...I already thanked you. ;)

The almost-empty "thanks" box looked cluttery to me, but if all the thanks from different people go in the same box, that's less cluttered than several separate thanks in the same thread. Also, allowing people to give thanks without boosting their post count is a good thing. Then we get only genuine thanks. :)

Maybe "thanks" is the best word here.

We could shrink the "thanks" box by reducing the font size of this text: "The Following User Says Thank You to SoftWareRevue For This Useful Post:" But maybe it only looks big at 800X600. It isn't a problem.

Since that text isn't a heading, I suggest not capitalizing the words except those that would be caplitalized anyway, i.e. the first word and the username if it's capitalized. It would look more natural IMO without the caps.

Are you thinking about adding this at WHT too? Maybe we could have "nice design" and "good luck" buttons too. ;)

There is the option of allowing Thanks for only the first post in a thread too.

If we're going to keep this, I'd like to give everyone the opportunity to be thanked. People write helpful content beyond the first post. :)

Yeh. If we keep it, we'll get a better button. :p

I think it is only right afterwards, which is a good idea. I can't remove my thanks any more. Not that I would've....:bag:

I might have removed that option. :bag2:

Just cuz you're the first one to be thanked.

:spin:

Does it have an option to allow it to be removed just for the first minute or so for all those people who click on it just because it's there to be clicked?

I like the idea of this mod, but it does need a bit of cleaning up (apart from the button).

Over there <--- I would take the "Thanks....Thanked..." bit away from Posts and put it in its own white box.

Up above ^ I agree with Lois, the text needs to be smaller. I would also work on sorting out the capitalization :D

As for changing the name, I can't think of anything else which would work. :s

Yeah, I think the "Thanks" section should have its own box. It's just a little cluttered, having that and the posts part in one box unto its own.

Apart from that, I think it's a great idea. :)

Okay. I moved the Thanks to its own div and cleaned up the text in the thanked post.

Now to remember who was doing the buttons last time.

That looks better :greenthum

Random thought: Wouldn't it be more appropriate to put the Thanked number first, rather than Thanks...?

. . .
Now to remember who was doing the buttons last time. :think:That would be that abd22791 dude that appears to have made the Thanks button. :agree:

I would probably remove the "Thanked 3 Times in 2 Posts" text under the number of times thanked. Seems to be irrelevant information, given the number of times thanked is just above.

Or how about "Thanks given for the above post by:" with the names of the thankers in the cell to the right. It's shorter, it introduces the names, you can use the same wording for one thanks or more than one thanks, and it doesn't repeat information.
