When it was first released, I firmly said no I was not going to pay that outrageous fee. I've had Dean's (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=91324&page=1&pp=15) installed for quite a bit, but it ain't too good. It only rewrites a tiny percent of what vBSEO does.
I'm good with mod_rewrite, I didn't have any troubles writing my .htaccess (off of Dean's), I just can't use the Plugin Manager. So there goes my thought of creating my own :(
Have you thought about buying or have bought vBSEO (http://www.crawlability.com/vbseo/)?

Anything Dean writes is crap. I use vb's built in SEO.

I'm in the same boat, VBSEO looks good, but a $150 price tag is just way too much. Used the alternative for a while, but it just didn't work either, so it's now back to the VB way of doing things ;)

Getting closer to the purchasing stage though.

Yep I'm the same Dennis...
I'm still not sure but if it's worth it in the long run it would be a good investment.
The price tag is pretty high...near enough the same price as a vBulletin license.
I think they offer a free version which most likely has less features, I saw something listed from the same company on vbulletin.org anyway.

That's their sitemap generator. Great software too :)

I think this is something more for the long run though and would most likely bring more visitors than advertising.
I still think it is has a pretty high tag though but if I could see proof that it works well I would buy it.

Thats often the thought that goes through my mind. $150 wouldn't go too far in google ads or most of the other alternatives, at least vBSEO would be a more permanent (potential) solution.

And now, Tyler (http://www.forumuniversity.com/campus/member.php?u=2) is working on vRewrite (http://www.forumuniversity.com/campus/showthread.php?t=249); which will be even more cost effective.

Yeah, what he said :P
vBSEO is just not worth it, the same could be done with .htaccess and a little bit of skill, definitely not worth $150 :P
