Recently I've been trying to think of "niche" ideas to get a good active community on a forum. I've already scrapped two previous ideas but today thought about making a forum for comedy, as in TV and Film mainly, but also other stuff like flash movies or textual jokes etc.
Now I know comedy is a fairly big niche (if you can call it that), but I was just thinking is it already that widely covered though, I mean I did a google search quickly for "comedy forums" and a few decent sized (thousands of members) ones came up but the rest seemed quite small or dead/inactive.

I've got a domain and everything, and I'm prepared to go and purchase my first copy of vbulletin (I've used IPB for my 2 other forums). Just wondered what everyone else thinks, and whether or not it's got a chance of being successful.
I'd appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks :)

Do you mean a forum to discuss TV comedy shows and movie comedies, among other things? A lot of TV shows are discussed at fanforum.com (http://www.fanforum.com/), and many of those shows have their own forums and newsgroups. That doesn't mean that you can't start another forum, of course, but I just wanted to mention what's already out there.

If the forum is about comedy and not particular comedy shows, I don't know what's already out there. Comedy as a leisure time activity has a lot of interest, with improv and stand-up comedy classes available for anyone to take. You might find an audience for this type of discussion. :)

Yeah primarily for discussing TV comedy shows and comedy movies. Never seen fanforum before and to be honest I don't really frequent too many forums other than my own.

I'm still a bit hesitant about starting the forum, not sure if it's gonna be a waste of time...

I don't frequent fanforum, but I've seen it and links to it a few times.

Starting out is difficult. Just about every idea for a forum is already in use and more than once. Is there room for another forum on the same topic? Maybe. My suggestion is to find ways to make yours different and to draw people to it.

Googling for a particular forum type usually gives an indication if any exist ;)

Try browsing some of those and see if you have something uniquely different that you can offer. Good luck with it!
