I've noticed that this particular board has a ton of really great smilies (and a few waaaay over the top too). So, here are a few related questions:
Where did you find the smilies you use on your board?
Did you ever pay for a smilie to be made, or pay for a smilie bundle?
Do you give credit to the maker of a smilie, or is it mostly a matter of appropriation without reference?

You can find smilies in a ton of places (I believe there is a link in SWR's sig). A site I've used in the past is this one (http://www.smileygenerator.us/) because it has such a huge range and it has the ability to create custom signs. (Such as: http://vulture.killanet.net/fu.gif)
Personally, I haven't ever paid to get smilies, nor would I likely ever do it. There are hundreds of high quality, free smilies out there - certainly more than one board needs.
When we add new smilies, we'll credit the source in the first post...that's really as far as we go - I'd be interested to hear if others do any different.

Dennis owns a great site (http://getmesmileys.com/), for that type of thing :)
I haven't really had to add any in awhile. But, I believe how most people/boards gets 'em are "burrowing off of another board".

. . . Where did you find the smilies you use on your board? . . . Most are found by visiting sites that offer smilies for free download.
Did you ever pay for a smilie to be made, or pay for a smilie bundle?
I've never paid for a smiley. If I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, I've made some and have had friends make some.
Do you give credit to the maker of a smilie, or is it mostly a matter of appropriation without reference?
It depends.
If someone makes a smiley because they know I've been looking for it, I sure try to say, "Here's the smiley username made for us!"
If I download a smiley from a site that offers free smilies, I'm not likely to say, "Look at this smiley I got from site."

Thanks for the tips, everyone. :D
I've checked out both sites, and borrowed a few for the fansite forum I run. I'm trying to keep the smilie numbers to a reasonable level since i do not wish to overburden people with too many options, but there certainly are some completely appropriate smilies available. Also, it's good to know the general etiquette when it comes to using smilies.
cheers!

Most of the smilies on my mboard are IPB ones when I used that software at one time. When I switched, I kept the smilies since I liked them better then the vB ones. I due have a bunch of others I've added over time, usually from the sources mentioned in earlier posts.

Most of my smilies are collected from other forums (with permission of their admins). I actually think the vb default ones are pretty cool, but its nice to have a ton of smilies :)

Just got a set from SMF's official forum as the default one is... not beautiful. I don't think I'll need more.
I'm not a fan of huge lists of smilies. It's too hard to choose which one to use. :D
I don't see myself paying for a custom smiley or set of smilies.
I believe giving credit for smilies is a bit unproductive. I guess I could post on my forum and say where I got them from, but that would be rather pointless as: if the forum gets popular (not a chance) the post would get eventually be burried; if the forum remains virtually empty the post won't be read by a significant number of people. :D
