Well,

I have developed what I thought was a good site with alot of information to start with and I am trying to add to it daily. My question is, how do I start to build this community. Obviously the thought of "If you build it, they will come" is not working, and yeah, I knew it never world.

The site is: http://www.homerepairhow2.com

How would I promote this so that browsers JOIN and Post? At the moment I have the vision of introducing a contest, giving away a gift card. What has worked in your communities in a member drive?

That's quite a nice place you've got there, I like the colours.

A few suggestions which might help boost the place up a bit:
-Submit to directories...helps to get crawled by search engines
-Register a few other usernames and get them posting
-Make sure you've got some posts in every forum. Empty forums aren't very appealing to prospective members.
-If you can afford it, advertising will obviously help.

Personally, I would avoid a contest at the moment. In my experience, they need quite a number of members to work.

Think positive, and good luck :)

I agree. :)

You might want to combine Lounge and Jokes, and maybe even Introductions for now so that you don't have too many empty forums.

Two questions about the articles:

- Do you have permission to reproduce the articles at your site? If you do, I suggest indicating this. When I see articles that appear to be copied from somewhere else and there's no link and permission notice, I think that the webmaster probably doesn't have permission to use them. Unfortunately, something like that calls the whole site into question. :(

- Do you want discussion about the articles? (A minute later) Now I see that you're inviting discussion, which leads me to wonder if "Knowledge Base" is the right name for these topics. Knowledge bases aren't typically for discussion. Or maybe you could spread these topics into the other forums?

If you build it and tell them about it in many different ways, they will come. :)

FANTASTIC layout and HTML work! Your site looks great!!

I think the biggest challenge in getting your board more active is getting your name out there. I would look in to some of the SEO (Search Engine Optimzation) stuff to see about getting your google ranking higher so folks can find you easier.

I think you've got a GREAT thing going.
