In my experience, the best thing to do is add more content. If you can, get some friends to help you out. Content is the key to getting a successful forum. ;)

Agreed, also does it help to have search engine spiders welcomed on the board?

It doesn't ever hurt -- something like 2% of unique visitors come from Google alone (and about .2% from all other search engines combined)
If you have severe bandwidth limitation issues, though, crawlers aren't for you. Crawlers use 3x the bandwidht of regular users according to AWStats

ya, bandwith is generally cheap so if you have extras then let them crawl away :)
some google marketing could be great (after adding lot of content)

How about advertising in top networks where there are a lot of traffic. would it produce results.
I would like to have suggestions and reviews over this.

Some of the most-used networks, like Google AdWords and Overture.
