I'm surprised no one has posted this yet. ;)

New features include subforums, friends and foes, warnings and reports, custom profile fields, online/offline and birthdays. It also has a much sharper looking default skin.

More info is here - http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=400283

Wow. Its been a bit since they had an upgrade hasn't it? I remember crying myself to sleep when i had to use phpBB's admin area on phpBB 2

Looks good, hopefully they'll be able to raise the reputation of phpBB with this version. I know it can't be easy coding something like that in spare time alone, but this is long overdue. I applaud those who've used phpBB 2 for so much longer that I ever could.

Yeah, phpbb 3 is long overdue, however it is a very nice overhaul. I hope that we will see a phpbb 3.2 in the next year, instead of 4 or 5+ years.

I'm waiting for an RC or stable release, but I frankly don't have too much hope :(.

I installed it some time back to give it a test. I liked their user management. This was due for quite some time. Good to see that they have finally worked on the user management. If you want to give it a look, try http://www.idealwebtools.com/mylife/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6 , I installed it to test phpBB 3.0, so you can mess around. If someone want admin access to exlplore it, I can give :).

Beta 2 is out now! I still wouldn't use either in a production enviroment, as you can see neither there is no upgrade script from beta 1 to beta 2, which means your beta 1 board is basically hosed.

Yes I agree, I installed it to test it and created a forum for a general purpose.

They have integrated a lot of existing mods in it, like user status, quick reply. For last three years I have tweaked almost everything with phpBB and may be we have better phpBB that phpBB itself :). I am looking forward for phpBB 3.0 as I will have to make our existing phpbb compatible with phpBB 3.0.

Codingwise they have not done much changes, I expected them to go more modular.
