View Full Version : Recruiting new moderators?

Usually the the recruitment of new moderators is an easy task and is generally a mutually agreed decision, given the past history of the member prior to selection.
But supposing an admin chooses someone to join the team who has been a proven thorn in the side of certain members and staff (although for the most part tries to be helpful). You have voiced your thoughts and the admin goes ahead and recruits anyway.
Obviously if you find someone annoying, that isn't going to change miraculously overnight, so how would you handle it? Grin and bear it? Make yourself scarce? Gracefully resign from your position on staff?

I'd go on a hunger strike until the said moderator is run out of town, you might even get caught on the news and boost the site traffic...

Grin and bear it?
That's what I would do. No point in leaving the staff becuase you don't like somebody on it. Life is full of people you don't like, just keep going, and try not to interact with this certain staff member too much. If he or she really is that bad, the admin will probably figure that out and remove that staff member anyways.

There are some other factors to consider. Are you also an admin? How do the rest of the moderators feel? The moderation team needs to get along and work as a team. If one person disrupts the team it may be a good idea for that person to steep down. If there is an issue have the admin address with the new moderator.

I've held jobs where I didn't care for certain co-workers. That didn't change my thoughts on my job at all.
Of course, the moderating team of a forum is generally pretty close. So, given your scenario, I'd have serious concerns on if the admin was trying to send me a message. What the message is, may take some digging. It could be that he wants me to leave and this is the easiest way for him to make that my decision. It could be that he finds your rigid thoughts on this particular member just that. Maybe you haven't backed your concerns with concrete reasoning.
I suppose we would need to know more.
Did the admin ask the entire staff their opinion on this member and only you voiced a concern? Did the admin not ask any staff for their opinion and it was brought up in private conversation with you? How do the forum members feel about this member now? How do the staff feel?
As an admin, if only one staff member had a problem with a proposed addition, I'd likely add the new moderator. If two or more had issues that I wasn't seeing, I'd weigh what I perceived would be the new staffer's strengths against the strengths I would be losing should the "two or more" decided they couldn't work with the new.

1. At present the staff consists of two.
2. See 1.
3. Many have left since he/she became a member. He/she is not yet added as a moderator, but will be soon.

This particular member has been mutually discussed in depth for many months, in particular how to deal with him/her for the betterment of the community and we have tamed the beast somewhat over time. It isn't some new thing that has arisen since the decision to recruit him/her to staff.

I think this statement is the key. One troublesome member is not worth many members. What did Spock say "The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few" If as member this person was driving away members than his/hers actions should have been corrected. If not you should have suggested the person find another community that better suits them.
