Alright, so I stumbled across this skin for IPB...that goes horizontal. You can see what I mean here (http://www.skinbydragonfly.com/forums/index.php). I don't know if anything similar exists for vB, it looked pretty unique to me. I'm still not sure whether I like it or not, what d'ya think?

Are you referring to the tabs? It certainly looks spiffy :)

If that's what you're referring to, I like it too. :)

I like it!! I'm wondering if something does exisit for VB. If not it shouldn't be too amazingly hard to do.
It might be great to have an 'events' area tab if you do a lot of different kind of events and on't want their specific forums to clutter up your main forum.

I thought it looked pretty different, although I don't know where it might be too confusing to people who aren't used to forums.
Yes, I'm talking about the tabs :)

It would depend on the design and what the tabs would be used for. It probably wouldn't be newbie-friendly but if you have an established community that the tab(s) are focused on then its easy enough to write an announcement with 'and check the Events' tab.
I recall a forum called threadmarket that had managed to switch the non-business from the business but in the end it make it seem like two forums... this way would have been nicer. (looks like they have since removed that and have just one huge ass list instead)
