View Full Version : Upgrade current skin or redesign

Odd Fact

Is the time of upgrade a good time to redesign? I am in the process of planning a big vB upgrade. The current skin is not the most upgrade friendly. To add I do not have access to the original source files. So is it best to modify a version using the current skin files or look at a completely new skin?

If your current skin won't support an upgrade, then get a new one. :)

You can always mimic the current design. Or just go boldly into that dark night and see what happens with something totally new.

If I wanted to upgrade this design to a software version that isn't supported with the files I have (I don't have source either), I'd go with something new.

But I like your first sentence . . .

"The time of upgrade is a good time to redesign."

I'm assuming this ties in with the other related threads? In which case, I'd suggest a new skin...newness all round would be my way of change. Lets members know that you're willing to take the place forward and keep it modern.

Yes Scott this ties in to the other threads. I was trying to hold off a new design to work for a better budget.

SWR I do like the idea of upgrading. Right now the site works as is. Maybe I should announcement the change in ownership and let the members get inolved. Either as part of a review board, consultant, or designer.

This might be a good time to get recommendations for vB designers.

I like that plan! :yippee:

Agreed, members will like that their included in the process of changing the forum. Since they too use your forum (hopefully) every day they should have some input on what changes, and you should listen to them (gotta keep those members, after all!).

I think when upgrading is probably the best time for a skin redesign. That way, not only will you have new features and a new look to show off, but you not have to worry about making a major overhaul of your brand new skin for a good long while (I believe there was at least a year between vBulletin 3.5 and 3.6, maybe a little less).

I am liking this plan. After making the annoucement the first step can be letting the members be involved in the design process(to a point, some people are just wack!)
