View Full Version : IP Address
Stupid question: How do I change my own IP address that others can read?
I've tried proxy servers, but once I have them on, I cannot log into anything (yahoo, msn, forums, etc.)
I'm willing to spend a little money if that's what it's gonig to take, but I need a different IP address though...

There are ways, but I'm not entirely sure why you would want to, unless you're trying to bypass bans.
Also I don't see how this is related to a community, unless you want to change your IP address so posts on your forum look like their coming from different IPs. Don't bother with that, 99% of all users will never even think of looking at the IPs of different posters, and with most forum software you can hide IPs.

No, well yeah it's kind of like that. Basically I am on the computer of my friend. who also has user names on other boards that I am a part of, so I want to change the IP of this one. But there are also some other reasons why, that we really dont need to get into here.
So basically, proxies are pointless to me because you cant log into email, forums, etc. with them. So I am willing to spend a little bit of money if this is what is going to take to get a different IP address...
You can't change your IP unless you get another ISP.

How do I do that?

The proxies you're trying use are probably dead. You need to find a working proxy, or buy a dedicated server and setup squid yourself.

The proxies I am using are working, I'm quite sure. Are proxies supposed to allow you to log into email, forum systems, etc?
And I cant afford a dedicated server at all, haha.
Are there any other ways to change an IP? I cant believe someone hasnt said "yeah, this program costs $20, but it will change your IP"
:( :( :(

Have you tried using your own computer and using a different ISP to your "friend"?

Nah, I don't even know what an ISP is. How would I go about getting a different one? Is it a hardware thing or software?
Guys, this pretty much is all I need to resolve, then I am ready to start my site. But I can't start until I get a different IP address.

ISP is Internet Service Provider, the company which gives you access to the internet, such as AOL, Comcast, <insert other US ISPs here>.
I can't imagine why you need a new IP to start a site.

Yah, really confused. Why are you at your friends house using his computer to do all this? Why should it matter what IP you havE?

Guys, it's really complicated and I could spend two hours explaining what's going on, but there's really no reason to. Yes, the computer I am using my friend has had users names off of on other weightlifting sites, so I dont want them to be able to tell that the IP addresses match.
Anyways, guess what? I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT.... I think! I uploaded Mozilla Firefox and saw my IP address isnt the same on whatsmyipaddress.com. Will a mod please look up the IP that rins up now and compare it to the IP that ran up in my previous posts?
Thanks!

They are the same.
Your IP is set by your provider, it won't change unless you change your provider.

Yah, really confused. Why are you at your friends house using his computer to do all this? Why should it matter what IP you havE?The most common reason is to get around bans and hide identity for shady reasons. I have yet to see a valid reason and honest reason for a forum member to change IPs.

I just wasn't sure if he meant he was really at his friends house using his computer, or if he is confused and think the IP is related to the computer itself and just trying to claim he HAS his 'friend's' computer as his house now. :D :D

identity security is a valid reason to want to change ip. You never know who is at the other end, and some personally identifiable information is stored in an ip address. Often, hostnames include information about where the connection originates, and if someone already has your name, they may be able to find more information about you, which they could then use for harassment, or even identity theft.
Not every person looking to be anonymous is bad.

I think you are quite misguieded on that.
ip addresses are only assigned access computer numbers. If you on dial up. disconnect reconnect. New ip.
Ergo all admins know ip ban is flawed. an admin can ban blocks of ip's but run the risk of banning someone else in a block that may not be intended.
Same IP is a security in many area's where one wants limited access as an organisation host such as a large corporation.
usually it is coupled with .htaccess protection and a few other features.

Dialup ISPs will often assign you to a specific subnet based on the number you dial. Also, many ISPs assign hostnames based on location for greater organization, as well as enhanced usability for programmers who develop scripts that attempt to guess location based on hostname. Take mine for example:
ppp-69-xxx-xx-250.dsl.sfldmi.ameritech.net
my actual ip address is 69.xxx.xx.250, and the connection is made in the southfield, MI datacenter of ameritech.
Same goes for many isps.

You have an at&t/ sbc/ ameritech account so what.
your router already has a firewall. and sbc gives you firewall protection with the install disk. nothing can come thru ports you don't authorize. If you can't keep your fellow machine users inline then I would suggest an administrative log in account for youself and limited log on access for them. Let them ask for your permission to install software just like they do at corporations where they have network administrators.
If you turn off your router and turn it back on again...tada new ip.
fyi I've had ameritech/sbc/at&t dsl since ameritech bought the covard system (which by the way previously you could only get dialup or isdn as dsl was limited to Royal Oak only at that time)
I've never had a virus. Good firewall keep anit virus up to date and don't use scumware.
Aye everyone. A little update: I still havent figured out how to change it. I think I'll call Comcast today and hopefully they can just flip a switch.
For those of you who are very curious as to why I need a new IP, just dont worry about it ;)
