The look of the SBM forum is just weird. Can anyone tell me how I can get things to look a bit more centered and square?

http://somebodysmad.com I have been working on that side bar for days now it just doesn't look right.

Alright, I've tidied it up to what I think you're aiming for. I've only got the raw html here, so you'll need to find where the changes go (can't help you there vB wise). Hope that helps :)

Completely lost on where to start to break that code down and put it. Where should I start, beginning from the top of the .txt file?

I would find a differences tool which allows you to compare the current HTML and the HTML I posted. Then change the edited bits on the relevent templates.

I can't tell you which are the relevent templates cause I don't have a vB to play with...maybe someone else will be able to point you in the right place.
